Going to work....

He's got his backpack and his "scrubs" (people say they are as comfy as pjs, right?) and he's ready to go....if only he could move with this really heavy backpack on!!

caught red handed...and a bit slobbery too...

just kidding...thankfully Maggie is NOT a slobbery dog!
Jack and I went out for a walk/drive (he was in his little red car...that sounds like a red car on the road with all the road noise reverberating through it....anyway...)on this absolutely positively gorgeous day. Sadly Daddy couldnt come since his allergies were on HIGH ALERT today...thus Maggie also had to stay home! :( Along the way he asked me for crackers (sorry....crackers ALL GONE) and for juice (sorry....no juice)...and then asked for juice again, and again and AGAIN....never getting too upset...it just made me laugh that he thought the answer would change! Once we got home I went straight to the kitchen to get him something to drink...and when I got back...THIS is what I found:

Sorry they are a little dark...the light wasnt great. I guess Jack felt sorry for Maggie, so he went around to where her "room" is and gave her some treats....she was in HEAVEN....and now we are out of dog treats....not sure how we are going to get her into her "room" tonight! I'm so glad they love each other!

play doh

Today I got an inkling....to make PLAY-DOH! (Actually it was a week or so ago...I'm just now writing about it!) I searched the internet for recipes...asked a few friends and settled on a kool-aid, no cook play dough recipe. I plan to post the recipe soon on my recipe blog....so click on that if you are interested...
I used "Berry Blue" and "Tropical Punch" to make blue and red play dough. Jack thought it was very fun. A few days later we went to Hobby Lobby and got some cookie cutters too!

Jack made a heart....and he is showing us where his heart is...
Jack is also making a little gingerbread man...I called him a "friend"...
Then he ripped the friend limb from limb!
Are you impressed with my sculpting skills? I made a BALL... and I can make a SNAKE! Jack was VERY impressed!

I just think this expression is funny. I've never really seen this before...not sure if this is his "I'm REALLY CONCENTRATING" look or what!

A weekend of FIRSTS!

*This was Jack's FIRST overnight away from Mommie! I was hosting a Book Discussion Group at our home on Saturday and needed Daddy to watch Jack, but Daddy had a Fantasy football draft on Friday night In order for both of us to do what we wanted to do, and for Jack to get a chance to hang out with Pops and Bertie, Daddy and Jack drove into Franklin Friday afternoon, Daddy went to his Fantasy Football draft and they both spent the night at Pops and Bertie's House. Thanks Pops and Bertie for watching Jack!!! I was able to get the whole house clean (and it stayed clean....until the guys got home! :) The Book Group went really well and I was able to have some downtime on my own., even getting to start planting my cool season garden.....broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, and swiss chard.
I was very sad when the guys drove away, but was able to pull myself together, and enjoyed my day very much...but I was also VERY anxious for my boys to come home!
As you can tell from this picture, he was NOT missing Mommie very much while at Pops and Bertie's house...look at their COOL toys!!

*Jack counted from 1-10 (almost) by himself! This morning I was changing his diaper and I started to recognize the words Jack was saying: "Wa....shooo....shree....foe.....shi.....sheh....ay....nie...neh...." Can anyone tell which number he would leave out? It was very exciting! I accused Daddy of drilling him on his numbers the whole time they were away! I'll do my best to get it on video asap
*Jack did his first somersault flip. Sometimes when he and Daddy are horsing around Daddy will help Jack do a flip on the floor...but up until today Jack couldnt get his bootie to go over his head. Somehow this morning he figured it out! I'll try to video it soon!
What an exciting weekend!
*ps-something I have been meaning to post: Maggie has a new name....Bahbee! Not sure how he got that from Mag-Gee.....but no matter how many times we say it correctly, or how slowly or how much emphasis we put on the different syllables and sounds.....it keeps coming out of his mouth as "Bah....Bee! (Think "Barbie" without the R sound ) He makes me laugh!

He keeps me on my toes...and then some!

Several funny and memorable things from today...

*This morning Daddy was updating his iPod and had our favorite Jason Mraz song playing "I'm Yours." We got so swept up in the moment, we did a family dance right there in Jack's bedroom. Then Jack let Mommie and Daddy dance together, and he danced with a Teddy Bear. It was SO precious, one of those moments a mom will remember for a long time, if not forever. I wish I had my camera at the ready....but I did get a picture of it later! I'll post it as soon as I get it off the camera.

*A few weeks ago I tried my hand at making Jalapeno Pepper Jelly. It tasted really good, but it never really jelled...so it was more like pepper syrup. Today I tried a technique to fix the spicy syrup back into proper jelly....so I attempted to do this while he was watching Curious George:the movie. Normally this would be something I would do during nap time, but SOMEONE decided to take a short nap today....so I was brave and tried it while he was awake...and everything was going fine....until:
I heard him scoot past behind me in the kitchen and head back towards his room....and come back into the kitchen with a very bare backside....apparently his diaper had come loose....and like the smarty pants (or no pants as the case may be!) he is....he put the diaper where ALL his used diapers go...in the pail in his room. When I laughed/shrieked at him "Where is your diaper?? Go get it NOW!" he pointed back to his room and ran off to get the missing undergarment. I meanwhile was up to my elbows in rapidly-jelling-sticky-spicy-pepper-jelly mixture, and had to extract myself from said mess before I could scoop him up and re-diaper his little bootie! whew! So far I havent seen any accidents along his path!

*This afternoon he and I were having one of our marathon book reading sessions....like 12 books at a time..this kid LOVES to plop himself into a lap and be read to..and I LOVE it! I noticed that twice when we were looking at pages with chickens he would point to his face when I would ask him "What is that animal?"...finally it dawned on me that he was pointing to his CHEEK to tell me that the animals were CHICKS.....pretty clever, eh? He's also done something similar when I would ask him to go get his MOWER and he would do the sign for MORE....didnt realize I had that much of a Southern Accent!

*This evening while I was at a meeting Josh asked Jack to tell him the name of our dog (Maggie)...and Jack did his usual reply of "Arf!"...so Josh asked him "Can you saw Maggie?" (not really expecting anything big to happen) and plain as day Jack said "MAGGIE!" In shock Josh asked again..."Can you say Maggie?!?" to which Jack replied "ARF!" over and over and over! Oh well! We love this kid so much!

**A prayer request from an anxious Mommie-I've noticed in the past 2 weeks or so Jack has gotten SO much more Curious and Daring...climbing EVERYWHERE...finding the most dangerous thing within his reach (and I think I'm pretty vigilant about keeping things out of reach) and often playing with it in a dangerous way (I'm realizing that not only is he getting TALLER, but his arms are getting LONGER and he is learning how to stretch out on his tiptoes....so many of my former "out of the way" spots arent so out of the way anymore...but I'm only learning this through experience) It seems like I cant even turn around, let alone do a load of laundry or fix dinner or take a shower or go to the BATHROOM without him getting into something. It's starting to freak me out a little bit....SO thankful that all crises have been well averted so far, but anxious about what he has up his sleeve for me next. I love this child with all of my heart and then some...so I feel such amazing gratitude that the Lord has kept him safe from any dangers so far....but it's really troubling me that these little situations are sneaking up on me. I keep telling myself when he does something scary/shocking "Ok, lesson learned... let's try not to allow a situation similar to this happen ever again" but I cant help but worry about what is coming next. (And I have a feeling if our own childhoods are any indication...trips to the er could very well happen SOMETIME....I'm just trying NOT to think about it....) So please pray for him and me....that the Lord will continue to keep this precious rambunctious bundle of energy safe and that the will give me the wisdom and forethought to keep our home as safe as possible for him...and not to worry so much! I keep reminding myself that the Lord has kept him safe so far, no reason why he would stop now....

do dogs have belly buttons?

This weekend Jack and I both came down with a bit of a cold....no fun! This morning, inspite of waking up really cruddy, he still made us laugh. I brought him into bed with us for a few minutes of cuddle time....and of course he found his favorite body part....his belly button. Whenever he finds it, he has to let out a delighted squeal like he is tickling himself....then he had to find Daddy's belly button and "tickle" him and then had to find mine and "tickle" me...really it's more like a poke and it reminds me of a pillsbury dough boy commercial! :) We told him he was so silly...and then his eyes lit up and said "arf!?" with his finger extended....he wanted to go find Maggie's belly button to tickle her! Do dogs even have belly buttons? Not sure I wanna go find out....although I do LOVE that he sees her so much as a part of our family!

made for tv moment

Jack and I got to go out for a wonderful walk this evening. I was sad that we were so busy this weekend we didnt get to enjoy the beautiful weather...so we made up for it with one of our first walks for over a week. Once we got home, I plopped him into his high chair while I made his dinner. We had a tv sitcom moment as I was pouring his milk into his favorite "Elmo....Abby!!!" sippy sup. You know....when someone is talking to a non-english speaker and is struggling to be understood?
Jack pipes up with "Mommie....joo-joo....bye-bye...love you." He obviously knew EXACTLY what he was saying and was surprised that I didn't understand...
I looked all over the kitchen to see what he was talking about and I took a stab at it:"Juice?? Do you want juice?"
"No!....joo-joo...bye-bye...love you" (a little slower this time, ala sitcom style)
"Honey, I still dont know what you mean, I'm sorry"-thinking back to our walk....could he be talking about that????drawing a blank...
"Joo-joo...bye-bye....love you" (this time louder and with hand signals but with a puzzled look on his face-what's wrong with you lady????) thankfully he is not getting frustrated...I wish you could have seen his face...it really was cute!
Still not understanding...I turn around to finish with his sippy cup, trying to change the subject when finally the lightbulb came on:
"CHOO CHOO!!! Are you talking about the choo-choo we went to see the other day? "(When we left we had to say bye-bye...and love you....in true Jack style)
"Yeah!" with a relieved look on his face....so we reminisced about the choo-choo at the Cookeville Depot.
All I have to say is that no one warned me that conversing with a toddler might include such wild and crazy changes in topics, like something specific we did LAST WEEK....whew!

bye-bye mystery cow...love you....

tonight I was starting up the dishwasher and it started making a strange sound....and apparently Jack thought that from the other room it sounded like it was moo-ing. Long after I had silenced the strange sound Jack was still on the look-out for this mystery cow. No amount of distractions from Josh could deter him...so eventually Josh just gave up and they started searching the house for the cow. Jack looked in each bedroom...even under our bed...moo-ing the entire time (and each time he would say "moo-moo?....no...." when it was nowhere to be found). Finally we had to convince him that the cow went away to which he said "bye-bye, *smooch*smooch* (blowing the cow a kiss), ya-you (love you)" I know he is getting this routine from our daily farewell sessions when daddy leaves for work...which by the way continue for at least 5 or 10 minutes after daddy has already left..."bye-bye daddy (kiss*kiss) ya-you" I never get tired of hearing him say these sweet things....
His little bye-bye routine has been cracking me up lately...for a while he would do byebye accompanied with blowing a few kisses....to EVERYONE! We got a few strange looks from the people at the post office and grocery store....and a few sweet reactions too....but now that he has been adding in the "love you" it's gotten even funnier (and cuter)...at least most people don't know what he is saying unless I translate, so its not gotten too weird yet. It really makes me laugh when I am changing a dirty diaper and I say something like "bye bye poopie diaper" and he will blow his poopie diaper kisses and say love you....same with boo-boos and bug bites.... I'm trying to convince him that there are just somethings we don't have to love...but what can I say...he's a loving little boy!

U is for......

This evening it started raining really hard as I was getting Jack ready for bed. I commented "Jack, do you hear all that rain?" and he started saying "YOU, YOU, YOU" very enthusiastically. It took me a second to realize he was actually saying "UUUUUUUUU" which is apparently what he calls UMBRELLAS...think about it....what does every childrens ABC book have on the U page???? An UMBRELLA! So I said "Do you mean Umbrella?" and he replied with an excited "YEAH!" Well, we had to go find some umbrellas...which was a bit of a task since all but 1 were tucked away in the car (keeping the car very dry too....) Once we found the umbrella he SPRINTED towards the back door and wanted to go out with the umbrella....so we did....and didnt get too wet. He enjoyed exploring the umbrella inside the house (I'm not too terribly superstitious about that) and even tormented Maggie with it. She didnt like it when we would make it open really quick near her. Sometimes he just amazes me.Maybe I should find him one of his own....

August Birthday Par-Tay!

We have several August Birthdays in our family and we celebrated 3 of them this past weekend at Ryans Buffet in Lebanon. Mzee, Uncle Daniel and Granny Franny were all on hand to celebrate their birthdays. My favorite part was when both Mzee and Daniel had stepped away from the table for a few minutes, and that was when the servers came out clapping to sing happy birthday.....which quickly screeched to a halt when they saw that most of the guests of honor were missing.....and then rared up again moments later when Mzee showed up. Daniel was still MIA, and we told them that it was ok since he is the teenager and would be mortified anyway...but they were not going to be deterred. A few minutes after Daniel got back to the table, the servers got fired up again and sang just to him....and he was pretty mortified....I'm sure all the other diners just LOVED us by then! :)
Mzee REALLY enjoyed doing his grandfatherly duties and taking Jack to the dessert table for sweets AFTER we had already eaten birthday cake....as you can see here....the Rice Krispee Treats were definitely Jack's favorite part of the party! We were HOPING he would nap on the way home....oh well.....I think it's cute....
We warned them that in a few weeks when they are watching him for us while we have a little get-away, he might expect all these sweets...and they won't have us around to calm him down....

I just can't help myself...

This morning before it was even 7 am I was suckered in....here I am sitting at the kitchen table trying to wake up fully and he comes toddling up asking for "cackers". I tried to brush him off and say "No crackers, how about some milk?" Well this sweet brilliant child, instead of throwing a little mini-fit as he is occasionally known to do at he word NO, he looks at me with this knowing look on his face (because he KNEW he was about to impress me!) and starts making the sign/sound of "fish" and then saying/signing "crackers"....he knows that up in the pantry I have some goldfish crackers I got on sale at Kroger. He was SPECIFICALLY asking for goldfish crackers. This is an interesting development! I asked him "Are you saying FISH crackers" to which he gave an enthusiastic "Yeah!" So I gave in....I have to reward such brilliance. He did this once before and I gave in too....I'll try not to do that all the time...
I was thinking yesterday, that when I have taken care of children this age whether in the nursery at church or at the preschool I worked one summer or while babysitting...I never gave them enough credit. I had no idea that children this age were capable of such things! I think I envisioned them at just BIG babies.I must have been insulting them with all the silly "baby" things I tried to do with them :) I'll try to do better with my own child.

Jack and Daddy's Big Day!

This is Josh. Here is a recap of Jack and Daddy's big day together:
We went to the Cookeville Train Depot and Museum. Jack said choo-choo (coo-coo) as soon as he saw the trains. He looks really big up there in all these pictures!
GET OFF THE TRACK!

Are we there yet?
After going to see the "Big Train" Jack and I went to the local toy store "Discovery Depot" to get him his own choo-choo. Since Mommie seems to think he isnt quite big enough for an electric train set, we had to settle for a plastic one...but he really seems to like it!

We also went to eat at Chikfila. Jack really likes the play area. He eyed it the whole time we were eating and as soon as I got him down from the high chair he made a beeline for the playground...almost like he had been there before...hmmmm...

A few new things....

*Jack has started playing more and more pretend. Lately he will be drinking from his sippy, then offer to let us have a sip. We will do the pretend "gulp, gulp, aaah" and he will laugh and copy us. Often he will offer it to the other people in the room as well...even Maggie
*Speaking of Maggie, her name is now "Arf,Arf". It's been interesting to see some of his words progress....Dog has gone from the sign for dog, to a panting noise for dog to arf arf....interesting. We are working on actual animal names....he does know "bird" and "bee" and "hippo" and a few others I can't remember now, and he has a strange sound that he does for pig...his own version of oink, I guess.
*I blogged week or so ago about him helping with dishes, and he also likes to help with laundry. He will get the dry laundry out of the dryer into the basket and then I can hand him the wet laundry to put into the dryer. The part that cracks me up is that he will label everything that goes into the dryer as "Mommie" or "Daddy"...and most of the time he is right about the owner...not sure though why he decided that all of the towels were "Mommie" hmmmm...
*About half the time he has a dirty diaper he will let us know by pointing to his bootie and saying "poop"....not that I couldn't already tell....but I hear this is one of the indicators of getting ready for potty training....not sure I am ready for this!
*We have some fake fruit that I bought at the dollar tree for him....and he can name almost all the pieces...apple (appuh) orange (orng), grapes (pssss) banana (nana) and lemon (memon)! We're still working on lime. He's also trying to say melon since he LOVES our almost daily watermelon snack time.
*This isn't really new...just cute...he gets so excited when Josh gets home! Here Jack and Maggie are both looking out the window watching Daddy walk in....Jack starts doing a "happy dance" and saying "HI HI HI HI HI HI HI!" Maggie just wags her tail :)

*He is determined to give me a heart attack on a daily basis. He especially enjoys climbing up on the dining room chairs....this is what I walked in on the other day...look! He's checking a blog!

*Jack has progressed from calling me MA-MA to MOMMIE! He is also almost always saying Daddy too!

*He just got his first BIG BOY haircut....Daddy and I both aren't too wild about it. Lately his haircuts have been quite an episode...but this time we took the passy, he sat in my lap, and everything went fine....so fine that she kept snipping and snipping and before I knew it, by baby had much less hair on his cute little head. Josh keeps reminding me his hair will grow, and if he's anything like his daddy, his hair will grow FAST!

*He's started eating with a real fork and spoon at dinnertime. He thinks he is BIG STUFF! We think so too. :) What has worked is to let him eat his dinner in the normal manner (with his hands) and when he starts to slow down...give him a fork and he will start eating again! The novelty hasn't worn off yet!
*Jack has also said a few sentences...."Hi Daddy" and "bye bye Daddy"...I know they are only 2 words, but they count, right? :)
*He's trying learn his colors....the other day in the Walmart Parking Lot we were putting up the cart and he starts saying "orng....orng..." and it took me a minute, but I discovered he was pointing to a (very ugly) burnt orange car and was letting me know it is "orange"...he's done it too with some multicolored toys here at home too...orange is the only one he gets consistently although he is getting better with blue ("boo") too.

Chores?? Already??

A few weeks ago I decided that Jack can start helping with the dishes. Before we get started I always get out the knives and breakable things, then he gets to come in and help:

He knows where the mixing bowls and cutting boards go...
this is something he's not seen before, so he had to play with the tongs before he put them in the drawernow they are put away...along with measuring cups
this is "his drawer" with all his cups and bowls
he knows to ask me to bring down the canister so he can put up the wooden spoons and spatulas

he also helps out with the silverware
and now we are finished!
I tried to avoid as much of my filthy kitchen as I could, but if any images of dirty dishes sneaked their way in, please dont judge.
Having him help may take longer than if I did it by myself, but having him help is a lot more fun, and he LOVES to help. I asked him this morning if he wanted to put up dishes and he replied with an enthusiastic YEAH!!! I KNOW that won't always be the case!!!
I also figure that even if it takes longer, at least the dishes are getting done outside of naptime, which hasn't happened since he's become mobile!

ABC Scrapbook

This past Saturday was the 2nd annual Scrapbooking Luau for our local MOPS group. Being a part of MOPS has been such a blessing to me, and I was eager to participate this year in this fundraiser even though I am not a scrapbooker.
I saw this idea for an ABC scrapbook on another blog and got inspired! I just knew that I would need a FOCUS for a scrapbook, or I would never finish! This format worked SO well for me. The luau was from 9am-9pm yesterday, and I was able to get A-U completed. It's possible I would have completed the entire thing, but I had to help out with setting up and cleaning up lunch and dinner. I was able to finish it all up on Sunday...here is the finished product and a page from inside.
He LOVES looking through it as you can see from the video! It is so fun to watch and listen to him leaf through it and practice his vocabulary.

Many thanks go out to Josh for watching Jack all day long while I went to this event. It marked the longest time I have spent away from Jack, and I was surprisingly ok. Maybe it helped that I spent all day looking at sweet pictures of him!

Roll Call

Not sure if this will work or not....but I am just curious who is reading our blog? There are a few other blogger friends that I think check fairly regularly, and of course the grandparents! I'm pretty sure we have a strong following in Texas, and several other states (and countries) that I didnt even realize we knew people in! So my request is....please leave a comment and let us know who you are (and maybe the state you are viewing from) and how you found our blog. It will be fun to find out who is checking up on us! THANKS!!!

vrooom-vrooom

As I showed you several months ago, Jack makes the same raspberry noise (phlpppttt) for almost all vehicles. He has started distinguishing a few of them (planes at least fly in the air, and trucks and cars are starting to say "beepbeep" and trains are starting to say "choochoo"). Here is a picture of him in his newest vehicle:

It has a nice handle in the back so I can push it while we go on walks. The hood opens as a storage space, and Jack decided the very first time he saw it that it would be a PERFECT place to store his juice/milk cups. Whenever one goes missing we try to remember to look there first!

Funny Daddy story: One of my former co-workers gave Jack a Mega Cars book as a baby shower gift....which I thought was so cute for a baby boy! Jack LOVES this book and makes the "pllbbuubbttt" raspberry/motor boat noise through the entire book. The other morning when we both went in to get Jack out of his crib Jack went straight to his Mega Cars book and Josh said "Watch out for that book...it should be called the 'Dehydrator' since he spits the whole time he looks at it". Guess you had to be there...but it cracked me up for a while! There are several of his car books that have pages that almost stick together from all the spray from the eager reader. Say it dont Spray it JACK!

Sunny Days, Sweeping the Clouds Away.....

A few months ago we had an unsolved mystery here in our household....how did Jack learn about Elmo? We weren't watching Sesame Street (no particular reason....just hadn't gotten hooked on it yet...) he didn't have any Elmo toys, just a few books that we never really read.....how did he learn about that silly red monster? We still don't have the answer, but we are now officially hooked on Sesame street. Papa John gave Jack a set of adorable Elmo Books, which Jack LOVES to read in the car. He also encouraged me to let Jack watch the show....I figured why not? I watched it my entire childhood...heard tales of my mom propping me up to watch it at 3 months of age...I have only fond memories of it...so we got hooked! I try VERY hard to limit his tv time, but hey, Mommie needs to shower and this keeps him entertained!
Now we are shocked at how much he is absorbing from the show:

*his diapers have sesame street characters on them....and he can now name Ernie, Bert in addition to Elmo....only we didnt teach him those names...that is strictly from the show!

*The other day at Story Time at the Library a little boy comes in with an Elmo Shirt and Jack gets all excited...ELMO!

*When I ask him if we wants to watch TV while mommie takes a bath he goes tearing through the house...he used to exclaim "ELMO ELMO" but now it sounds more like "OSCAR OSCAR"

*I'm not big on commercial characters on clothes, but since he loves Elmo so much I have broken down and gotten him a few Elmo shirts. The one he is wearing today has Big Bird and Elmo both on it, so now we know BIG BIRD too! (I tried to get a picture of him AND Big Bird, but you may juts have to trust me that it's there!)

*The most shocking one to me was yesterday when we were on our way to church and he was reading one of those books from Papa John and he starts saying "Abby, Abby" At first I thought he might have been trying to say "Baby" but no....he saw one of the newer characters that I barely know "Abby Cadabby."

Now I am HOPING that he is learning more from the show other than the names of the characters...and maybe he is....he's been recognizing more letters lately...which is usually shocking to me....like the other morning when I,barely awake, stumbled in to get him out of his crib. He looks at the BELMONT CHEERLEADER shirt I was wearing and starts pointing to the letters saying "O....T....A....B" Well, that woke me up really fast! Now, I wont say that he knows these letters all the time....but maybe half the time we ask him to identify O, T, A, B, Z, .I and a few others, he will get them right! Maybe that is from Sesame Street too? Who knows?

I dont know how many of you watch with your kids, but it's actually still pretty cute, and you can tell they are trying to still appeal a bit to the parents who grew up with the show. They balance new skits and characters with classic Sesame Street moments. They have actors from Grey's Anatomy and other sitcoms making fools of themselves and have skits based on Law and Order and other popular shows. It's pretty clever! Can you believe Sesame Street has been around for 40 years?
